Looking Back At My First Dungeons And Dragons Character

A long time ago, this was my first Dungeons and Dragons character that I ever played.

Technically my first AD&D character; while I had the Basic edition, I never ended up playing it with anyone else.

Looking back, there’s some things that aren’t going to surprise anyone. Good-aligned cleric? Yup. Early teen me trying to act like I knew what "dope" was, trying to seem edgy and ending up cringe? Yup. Rationalizing away my — I mean my character’s — lack of romantic success? Absolutely. Completely stereotypical backstory full of tropes and a strange incest twist? Yuuuuuuuuuuup.

But I say all of that with a degree of fondness. This was my first "real" character.

I’ve saved many of my characters over the years. Sometimes their stories can be summed up in a sentence: "I played Silent Bob during a dungeon crawl, only speaking once per session." Sometimes their stories have highs and lows spanning months or even years.

Regardless of the version, regardless of the game system, the stories and laughter I and others have shared during roleplaying games… well, it was the real reward all along.

Speaking of, there’s still spots available to play in my Monday or Thursday night campaign, I’ll be posting pick-up one-shot sessions frequently for the weekends. And I’m also available on demand, if you need a break from GM’ing for a week or two to run a one-shot online for your group. Check it out over at The Black Talons website: https://theblacktalons.com .

As a last admin note, I’ve shifted the email subscribers for this site from Jetpack to MailChimp. If you’d like to get these blog posts via email, there’s a form in the footer of the page.
