They are our neighbors. They are our relatives. They are our co-workers.
They think they are doing this for you.
They think your silence means you are on their side.
I know that it is difficult – sometimes even dangerous – to confront these bullies.
Being quiet will not keep the peace.
Being quiet just means that their chaos, destruction, and hatred goes unopposed.
They think you are on their side.
Speak up and speak out.
Not just when they forward their rationalizations of their fascism. Speak out freely and loudly. Say how their conduct is utterly against the principles this country is supposed to stand for. Renounce their hatred and violence – no matter whether they are your friends, your neighbors, or your relatives.
You want peace? You want this kind of bigoted bullying to end?
Then you must stand up now. Not tomorrow. Not when they attack again – because they will – but right now.
They must know that they cannot bully us into silence and complicity.
Otherwise, it will not be peace. It will be the violence they crave.
It is up to you – yes, YOU – to tell them they’re wrong. To rebuke them. To perhaps even save them from themselves.
But more importantly, to save what’s left of our country from the bigots that would take it for their own.
