Boundaries in relationships don’t have anything to do with emotions, and that’s a good thing.

I’ve talked about boundaries previously. In those, I outlined how boundaries are not threats and how they are different (and better than) “rules” because they’re about your behavior and what you will accept instead of dictating what someone else will do.

But there’s something else important about boundaries.

They’re not about feelings.

It’s not about wondering whether or not they meant it.

It’s not about whether or not they’re going to make it up to you.

It’s not about reconsidering if they should get yet another chance.

It’s not about whether or not they’re bad all the time.

Boundaries are about you. They’re about your actions, and the promises you made yourself.

It’s a relief, really.

They take the guesswork out of things.

It’s simply what you want, what you need, and what sort of behavior you’ll accept from others – and what you’ll do when those lines are crossed.
