Writing Challenges, Word Counts, And Community

Hey writer and coder folks: I’ve already put together a pretty simple PHP/bash method of counting words in DOC, DOCX, RTF, ODT, markdown, and plaintext, spitting a result back at you, and (optionally) logging it to a simple markdown file. No data is retained save for the IP address submitting the file, the word length, and (optionally) a user-submitted name.

It’s a proof of concept and held together with spit, rubber bands, and cursing, with only some ratelimiting built in.

However, if you would find this useful for a NaNo replacement counter OR have the chops to integrate this with logins from SimpleMachines/ know how to interface this with a database/ etc, please let me know, submit a PR, etc. The code is on GitHub.

Likewise, I’ve got the infrastructure for a (midsize) community of writers supporting each other already set up and running with the weekly flash fiction challenge. We’re looking at whether there’s interest in creating a section for mutual writerly support there as well. No data there will be used for training AI/ML models. You retain all copyright of works submitted there (that’s why it’s behind a login, so it’s not on the "open internet".)

We will be having a new challenge today (Friday), so come check us out in the meantime.

And if you’d be interested in helping moderate/admin a section for those doing longer writing challenges, please let me know, and we’ll talk about it!
