A Voice United Against Hate

After finally deciding to sue to try to stop the Klan from coming to Dayton, city officials are planning a public forum to “discuss possible community-wide responses to a planned hate group rally in May“.

This public forum will be held at Grace United Methodist Church THIS WEDNESDAY, 20 March at 7pm.

Look, folks, there’s part of me that wants to believe this is going to amount to something. At the same time, as WDTN reports:

Officials stress that any event that comes as a result of the forum will be community-led, and the City simply wants to help facilitate a conversation.

There are times that I want to pull my hair out in frustration.

The paradox of tolerance is well documented and thought out:

The paradox of tolerance states that if a society is tolerant without limit, its ability to be tolerant is eventually seized or destroyed by the intolerant.

This is philosophy and ethics 101, folks. There is not a goddamned discussion to be had.

While the “culture of outrage” and knee-jerk purity tests are problematic, that doesn’t apply when you’re talking about people who want to eliminate liberalism, force people with different sexual/romantic feelings to hide them in public, or claim that dating someone of a different “race” (itself a bullshit concept) is “genocide”. (Their words and concepts, quoted on – of course – Fox: https://fox45now.com/news/local/city-of-dayton-filing-lawsuit-against-kkk-affiliated-group-planning-rally )

The city leaders need to realize that while it won’t be difficult to find voices united against hate, trying to have a dialogue with the Klan isn’t exactly a winning proposition.
