PSA: Please protest the repeal of Obamacare/Affordable Care Act.
TL:DR The language protecting pre existing conditions is really important.
A scan of the human genome for disease biomarkers is about $1000 today.
Just $1000. Scientists and drug companies are constantly adding new
gene markers to help us figure out if people are likely to get diseases,
especially later in life.
Without Obamacare, there is little to
prevent an insurance company from asking for a ‘routine’ blood sample
and testing your genes, and then setting your insurance rate according
to all your *genetic* pre-existing conditions. Or simply deciding your
genetic combination is too risky to insure, *even if you’re not sick*.
GINA (the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act) doesn’t protect
against conditions classified as disabilities or ones requiring long
term care. Both diabetes and cancer could be classified as these and
save health insurance companies a lot of cash.
Please. Obamacare ain’t perfect and needs fixing. But don’t get rid of the good parts!
